It began life as a small wool market town. In 1807 the town was all but destroyed by fire. Only the church and seven houses were left; amazingly there were no fatalities. Local Amenities include, Outdoor Swimming Pool, Cricket field and football pitches. There is a Primary School located in the centre. There is an annual carnival each summer which draws a huge crowd from the surrounding area. Chudleigh has expanded lots in recent years as commuter houses have been bolted on around the edges, but it still retains a fairly traditional town centre.
