UPDATE Patches has been diagnosed with Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy, or HCM. She has begun medical treatment. Patches is a sanctuary kitty at Our Lady of Mercy's Catnip Cottage. Ask us how you can virtually adopt Patches. We will send you updates and photos of her for your regular monthly donations. Patches will live out the rest of her natural life at her foster home as a Catnip Cottage sanctuary cat. There is no way around this. Poor Patches has suffered badly from her life as a stray. Most likely, she was left behind or abandoned outside by a former human companon. Patches was rescued by a caring and compassionate couple. Since coming indoors at the Catnip Cottage again, we have found that her poor body was absolutely infested with parasites of every kind. Sweet, patient Patches was suffering from a heavy flea infestation, coccidia and tape worms which depleted her nutritional stores and caused anemia and poor coat condition. With her weakened immune system from all of this, Patches became exposed to the L-form bacteria, a new bacterial strain that does not show up on cultures and is resistant to antibiotics. This bacterial infection caused an autoimmune skin disorder, where her immune system attacked her own skin. This caused sores on her skin as her skin blistered, the blisters ruptured and then crusted. Through the intense and dedicated research of her veterinarian, he found the one antibiotic that the L-form bacteria do respond to and Patches is now healing very nicely. Her skin is clear and bright, and she is feeling quite well now. But as If those weren't enough problems, Patches has an old knee injury that causes her lameness and some pain. Our vet has prescribed Cosequin for the knee injury, which we sprinkle over the top of her food to help the ligaments in her knee joint heal. Cosequin is a gentle supplement, formed from glucosamine and chlondroitin that can be purchased over the counter and formulated for cats which helps arthritis and joint degeneration. The muscles around the knee have atrophied from this old injury. Despite all of her past pain and discomfort, patient Patches is a wonderful, gentle, calm, loving kitty with the most sweet, affectionate, joyful and patient nature. Life is too grand for Patches to be contained in one purr! She talks to us in delightful little chirps and chirrups while she's enjoying being brushed and snuggled. She purrs so loudly and happily sometimes I expect it to register on the Richter scale! Patches would fit into a gentle-natured home beautifully. Patches (c) 2005 by Carol Notermann I've a "coat of many colors", that is pretty as can be
And like Joseph and his pretty coat, life was hard on me.
But here at Catnip Cottage, I'm well and feeling fine
And starting to forget, the hard life that was mine. I'm walking well and jumping, and playing with a ball
I've even started talking when people come to call.
I'll need some medication, cause of all that I've come through
But if you take me home, I'll give so much love to you. I'm a very gentle lady, filled with patience through and through
And I'm looking for a quiet home, perhaps, for just us two.
But if you have another cat, who's lonely just like me
Wouldn't it be wonderful, to watch us play with glee?
